📖 SABOTAGE – Book One: The Ghost Protocol (C-4)
✨ Chapter 4: “Echo Triggers”
---
INT. SAFEHOUSE – NIGHT
Lency sat cross-legged on the cold concrete floor, eyes closed. The Root Key floated above her palms, spinning slowly, humming softly.
Kim’s voice echoed from the holo-display.
> “This is risky. The key isn’t just unlocking memories—it’s syncing to your neural network.”
> “I don’t care,” she said.
“If it shows me the truth… I’ll take the risk.”
---
Suddenly—
FLASH.
A ripple of light burst from the key and hit her chest like a shockwave. Lency’s mind dropped into the dark.
---
INT. MEMORY STORM – MINDSPACE
She stood in a black void. Above her, fragmented holograms drifted like stars.
> Her mother’s voice.
A red valley with twin moons.
Her hands holding something burning—metal… no, bone.
A child’s scream.
She gasped.
Then she saw it.
Division 9 before it was Division 9.
A startup in a glass building. People laughing. And at the center—Steve. Younger. Human. Smiling.
Lency saw herself—no, someone like her—handing him a data chip. Voluntarily.
> “I was one of the first.”
---
INT. KIM’S VAN – SIMULTANEOUSLY
Kim’s monitors lit up with warning glyphs.
> ECHO TRIGGERED.
ORIGIN TRACE: LENCY (CORE)
His eyes widened.
> “She’s unlocking Echo memory... but no one survives that unless—”
His sentence froze as his system was hacked—from inside.
A corrupted voice leaked through the comm:
> “She’s not yours anymore, Kim.”
Then static.
---
INT. DIVISION 9 – OBSERVATION CHAMBER
Alex and Steve watched a live feed of Lency convulsing inside the safehouse.
> “She’s opened an Echo pathway,” Steve muttered.
Alex said nothing. His cybernetic eye flickered, syncing to Lency’s pulse.
His hand twitched.
> “Do we intercept?” a soldier asked.
Steve shook his head.
> “No. Let her remember. That way, when we erase her again, it hurts more.”
---
INT. DIVISION 9 – JANELLE’S PRIVATE QUARTERS
Janelle stared at the encrypted pendant on her bed.
She tapped it twice.
It began projecting whispers—memories smuggled out of the Vault.
Echoes of her brother’s voice. A name. A scream. A command.
> “Run, Janelle. Before they rewrite you too.”
Tears welled. But her face remained still.
She opened a drawer and pulled out a stolen security badge.
> “Time to go deeper.”
---
INT. SAFEHOUSE – MINUTES LATER
Lency jolted awake, gasping.
She looked down at her hands—shaking, burning with light.
The Root Key floated above her heart, now glowing gold.
> “Kim?” she whispered.
But there was no answer.
Only static.
And then a message.
> DIVISION 9: TRACE ENGAGED.
They were coming.
